It turns out the Department of Justice isn’t the only federal agency defying Donald Trump and his unconstitutional Muslim ban today, as the State Department is also now formally getting in on the action. Hours ago Acting Attorney General Sally Yates announced that she was instructing DOJ employees to defy Trump’s order. And while the State Department is already in the hands of new Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, a Trump-Putin lackey, his underlings are taking formal action against him as well.
State Department employees formally filed a dissent memo today, a five page document to officially register their objections to Donald Trump’s actions. It’s already been signed by a triple digit number of employees, and in part it reads:
“A policy which closes our doors to over 200 million legitimate travelers in the hopes of preventing a small number of travelers who intend to harm Americans from using the visa system to enter the United States will not achieve its aim of making our country safer,” before adding that “Alternative solutions are available to address the risk of terror attacks which are both more effective and in line with Department of State and American values.”

While this dissent memo cannot legally stop Donald Trump from pushing forward with his executive order, it does publicly put the State Department at odds with the Trump administration. It also puts Tillerson in the tenuous position of having hundreds of his own employees openly rebelling against him and his new boss just seven days after he was confirmed as Secretary of State.
Meanwhile White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who has become so visibly rattled after ten days of having to lie on Donald Trump’s behalf that he’s now mistakenly tweeting everything from his own password to Onion articles about himself, angrily responded to the State Department dissent memo by suggesting that those who signed it should resign. But they’re not going anywhere. The Resistance continues.
